Dearest Friends:
We would like to take a moment of your
time to introduce you to a most amazing and wonderful place.
Far away, in the dusty hills of Haiti, high along the Dominican
frontier, is a little village call Juampas. For most than a
day's walk in any direction, little or no health care has been
available for those who call the area home.
These are simple people-subsistence
farmers and sugar plantation worker for the most part-who live far
below what we would consider a decent standard of living.
Even by Haitian standards they are quite poor. Many
residents of Juampas suffer from a long list of maladies, arising
from disease and the effects of poverty, including malnutrition
and a complete lack of pre-natal care.
Our first
mission to Juampas, led by Marline Olivier and Glenda Johnson,
took place in 1999. In the ensuring months several more missions
took place, involving many dedicated volunteers. This group,
which includes physicians, dentists, nurses and translators, has
succeeded in establishing a functional health presence in the
area. Regular medical missions now provide care for the
village and surrounding residents.
The effects of these missions have
been tremendous. Pre-natal care, treatments for both chronic and
acute disease, and modern dentistry have been brought to the
people. Many very ill patients have had their lives saved.
From far and wide, by foot, down river by boat-however they can
get there-people come by the hundred when word gets around that
the health team is coming.
In the next year a permanent clinic
will be built, and the volunteer team hopes to increase
their presence among these forgotten people of the Haitian
frontier. This
work is both effective and rewarding. But it takes resources
beyond those of its participants to make it happen.
We need your help to make a different
in Juampas, Haiti and the surrounding villages, so we're asking
you to look over our wish list and
photographs and consider supporting this project. The
people we serve will be grateful for any amount you can
contribute.
Thank you for caring and sharing.
