The Triage Area
Sally Nellessen, R.N.
Over the past two years, I have had the privilege and honor of working with Medical Wings International. My travels have taken me to the large cities and small towns of Central and South America. There, I have been able to use my 30 years of nursing experience in the most rewarding way possible.
The number of people lined up to see when we first arrive at a site always amazes me. They patiently wait for hours, no matter the weather, even in the flooding downpours of the rainy season in El Salvador, to seek medical attention.
As triage nurse, I do the initial screening and obtain histories, vital signs and exams. In many circumstances, I am able to reassure, teach, and treat the patients myself. The need for simple home-care teaching is incredible, and I see this as my greatest contribution.
The patients are an eternal inspiration to me: the elderly lady with hands twisted and crippled by arthritis who had never seen a doctor; the nine-month old surviving on flour mixed with water; the mother of a disabled eight-year-old to whom we could give a wheelchair to help lessen the burden of carrying her child; and all of the people we are able to help see better with glasses. So many people, with so many needs.
My rewards are too numerous to count. The many hugs, the tears of gratitude, and always, always the smiles and laughter of the children. I have been blessed.
