Pediatrician
Pediatrician: Dr. Lora, Chris Horton
As a pediatrician, I enjoy seeing the children of the different countries we visit. My goal is to provide care for acute illnesses, such as acute upper respiratory, ear or pulmonary infections.
I also see many gastrointestinal and parasitic infections. We bring treatment for allergies and asthma, and see these conditions frequently. Managing chronic illnesses is more of a challenge, and sometimes we are able to link patients with local resources for ongoing care.
It is fun to learn about the families and cultural factors at work in the communities we visit; these play a tremendous role in the health issues of the patients we see. I am able to do brief nutritional assessments, and identify problem cases that need additional local follow-up. We rely very much on our translators and cultural liaisons to assist us in this area. It is rewarding and enjoyable to get to know our patients and local volunteers, even though we are only in the country for a short time.
We hope to return to countries on a regular basis so that we can improve our ability to understand and address the medical issues that are most important in that community, and eventually determine long-term goals for improvement.
