Better Seeing

Joining Medical Wings International as an eye care technician was one of the greatest things I ever did. That was five years ago and I still eagerly awaiting the next trip, knowing that what we do improve people's daily lives. Vision is something we take for granted; imagine your life without being able to see clearly. It amazes me how many people are willing to wait all day in a sweltering line for a chance to see an eye doctor; the majority of them have never had a vision screening. To give someone their first pair of eyeglasses is one of the most rewarding acts of kindness I have ever done. MWI doctors are not only able to correct their vision, but also treat a wide variety of eye problems from simple allergies, removal of foreign bodies, treat eye infections, and test for glaucoma. We come with a wide range of eye medications donated by the pharmaceutical companies to treat the many problems we encounter.
Medical Wings International, welcomes volunteers to help assist the eye team; we are in need of vision screeners, doctors, and eye technicians who will work with the team. Donations of all types of eyeglasses, especially sunglasses, of all sizes. It makes sense, when you think about how many of the people we care for work out in the hot sun all day and have no eye protection. We are also seeking transportable optical equipment. Spanish speaking volunteers are also welcome.
It is the same all over the world as it is here, people over 40 years of age most often need two pair of eyeglasses, a pair for distance and a pair for reading. On an average MWI mission, we provide six to eight hundred pairs of glasses to those in need. These eyeglasses come from many different sources; some are purchased readers, others are donated from organizations. Recently Jo Cross joined the MWI staff as an eye care technician; Jo has greatly improved our system of organizing our inventory of eyeglasses.
